Portfolio Project Genre #2

For one of them, I was considering the coming of age genre. Lots of the coming of age genre productions focus attention on the development of a character from childhood to adult life. Coming of age films tend to be real and tearful, something that might greatly appeal to audiences.

Typical Target Audience

Teenagers to young adults make up the major audience for coming-of-age productions, but many older people also watch these productions. Through nostalgia, old audiences also join actively in the film narrative and movies. People are drawn by these themes because of the relatability and the emotions.

Genre Conventions with Content

In coming of age stories, Identity, friendship, family conflict, independence and self discovery are often explored. Most films in this genre, their main characters always meet something which helps them grow up and live more fully; or forces them, however unwillingly, to gain a better perspective of life. Most of these stories take place in local locations resembling everyday places: schools, homes, or neighborhoods. The emphasis tends toward changing attitudes rather than physical activity.

Genre Conventions with Technique

Frequent techniques in productions with this theme include natural lighting, realistic dialogue and very simple settings. Close-up shots are often used to present emotions and inner conflict. The music in a coming of age film plays an important part in showing how the character feels at that moment or over a long period more generally. The result of the slow pacing is that there is then time for character development.

Institutional Conventions

Coming of age films are usually presented as relatable and filled with emotional feelings. The posters main focus is to show the characters with light colors. Trailers will exaggerate the relationships between characters, social roles, different changes in life. Indie studios usually make these types of movies and also Indie studios also mainly sell them too.

Two Productions That Represent the Genre

The coming of age genre is represented by “Lady Bird”, which is primarily about how identity struggle affects a person and also family relationships. also “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”, which talks about friendship, trauma and finally growing up.

Overall, the coming-of-age genre is a great choice for my portfolio project because it makes the viewer engage in meaningful storytelling and concentrate on character development and emotional feelings.
