Portfolio Project Genre #1

The crime genre is one of the genres I'm thinking about doing my portfolio project on. The crime genre generally focuses on illegal activities and the people engaged in or harmed by them, including criminals, victims, officers or other law enforcement, reporters and so on. This genre is often connected with serious themes and presents realistic situations, which makes engaging to many different audiences.

Typical Target Audience

The target audience is usually aged from around fifteen to forty or older teenagers and adults is the typical target audience for crime films and TV programs. Their tastes tend towards storylines that bring an element of suspense or mystery while still seem realistic. For these reasons, crime media often attracts those who enjoy intense narratives and morally complex characters.

Genre Conventions With Content

In a crime story, the events might center around thievery, drug dealing and even gang activity or murder. Its narrative is often about an investigation, a criminal's rise and fall, or else the consequences of crime. Main topics include power, justice, loyalty, morality, or corruption. People are often forced into difficult situations where all their choices can only be bad ones.

Genre Conventions with Techniques

The popular low-key lighting and dark colors are used in crime films to create a serious and gritty atmosphere. Handheld camera shooting can sometimes lend an added sense of reality or tension. Close-ups are mostly used during interrogations or scenes of deep emotion, while fast editing techniques and quick pacing might be used to cover action sequences and violent outbreaks. The music usually is very dramatic or very minimalist, which tends to build suspense.

Institutional Conventions

a crime film is frequently seen intense and realistic. The typical poster includes grim, unsmiling faces on top of even grimmer backgrounds textured with shadowy gray or black tones. The preview commercial concentrates on conflict, tension, and mysteries which it hints at rather than offering solutions to. Films of this sort may also be based on or inspired by a true story which adds to the authenticity of the production.

Two Productions That Represent the Genre

Two crime productions that stand out to me are: "Breaking Bad" which shows how crime and environment can change a person. And “Top Boy” which deals with crime and loyalty and survival inside of a community

Overall, the crime genre is a perfect fit for my portfolio project. It provides realistic storytelling, motives that are entirely clear to the reader, strong characters and the chance to use film/editing techniques to create suspense and excitement, which I feel I could excel at.
