One Word Film Project

For our One Word Film Project, we were challenged to pick a random single word from a cup and bring it to life through a short film that relied on visuals and editing rather than narration, and I picked up the word “serious.” During brainstorming, I thought about times when being serious matters most, and a test setting instantly came to mind, so I sketched out ideas on my brainstorming sheet and built a storyboard that helped me pre-visualize the flow of the story before filming. In my film, two boys walk into a classroom during a major test worth 80% of their grade: one is prepared and serious, the other is unserious and unprepared. The serious student quickly begins working through the problems with confidence, while the unserious student stares blankly, full of confusion and regret for not studying. Using my storyboard as a guide, I shot each scene to highlight their contrast and then used Adobe Express to edit the footage, keeping the serious student’s shots steady and clean while making the unserious student’s shots feel more frantic to match his stress. At the climax, the unserious student taps on the serious student’s desk and tries to cheat, but the serious student refuses, finishing and submitting his test while the other is left behind with nothing completed. Looking back, I think we did a good job making the contrast between the two characters clear and making sure my storyboard matched the final product, but next time I would like to work on adding more dynamic camera angles and smoother transitions to make the film even stronger.

My Camera Shots Quiz

At the start of this course, we had a different kind of quiz. Instead of a regular written test, it was based on camera shots we learned in the last class.

The assignment was to use those shots to tell a short story. We could use objects, people, or both, but the main goal was to not just name the shots but actually use them in a way that fit their purpose. We had to include 11 specific shots plus 4 more of our choice.

For my project, I decided to make a story about a the erasers vs the weak paper people  specifically the scene where Peren’s mom dies. I thought it would be a powerful way to show different emotions through the shots. I used objects and props to represent the characters and made sure each angle and framing matched the mood of the moment. For example, I used an extreme close-up to highlight grief and fear of the smiling eraser titan, and wider shots to show the destruction happening around them.

Overall, I think my partner and I did a good job using the shots correctly and letting them drive the story and emotion. If I could improve anything, it would be the way the shots were taken I think I could’ve made them a bit sharper and framed the “characters” better

Final Reflection of this Project

This project has by far been the longest and most tedious project I've ever done, there were days where I was just thinking about how I...
